Help & guide
Everything you can do in Plotelle, walked through in order — from a first spark of an idea to a finished graphic novel with clean lettering. If you'd rather be shown, open the drawer menu inside the studio and choose Show tutorial for a live tour.
Getting started
- Click Begin your story creation here on the home page, or open /app if you already have an account.
- You can also click Try it free to sketch a project in your browser with no sign-up. That work stays on your device until you create an account.
- Once signed in, tap New graphic novel in the top-right to open a fresh project.
The AI project manager
Every project has an AI chat panel on the left. Think of it as a creative producer: it drafts, revises, brainstorms, and can pre-fill any field on the right for you.
- Ask for a draft: "Give me three premises for a dark fantasy graphic novel."
- Ask for edits: "Make the second character darker and give her a rival."
- Ask for structure: "Turn my premise into a 6-chapter outline with a mid-story reversal."
Copy anything from the chat into the stage on the right — or ask the AI to write it directly into the current section.
Premise & setup
Set the working title, one-line pitch, genre, and art direction in the Setup tab. The Premise tab is a longer synopsis — a few paragraphs that anchor the story. The more specific you are, the better the AI's suggestions get.
Characters
Add each principal character with a name, role, appearance, and voice. Appearance details drive the portrait art, so include hair, wardrobe, distinguishing features, and mood. You can reorder, edit, and delete characters at any time.
Chapter outline
The outline is the spine of the book. Add chapters with a title and a short synopsis. Reorder them by dragging. Ask the AI to pace, split, or merge chapters if the story feels lopsided.
Panel-by-panel scripts
Open any chapter to write it panel by panel. Each panel has:
- Scene description — what's happening, what's in frame.
- Camera / composition — angle, distance, mood.
- Dialogue & captions — spoken lines and narration.
Ask the AI to draft a whole page of panels at once, then tweak. You can insert, duplicate, and reorder panels.
Character portraits & panel art
Click Generate on a character to render a portrait from the appearance details. On a panel, Generate art renders the panel using the scene description, chosen camera, and the character portraits already locked in — so the same character stays consistent from panel to panel.
If a render isn't right, edit the description and generate again. Each successful generation counts against your page allowance (see below).
Speech bubbles (transparent backgrounds & more)
Once panel art exists, dialogue and captions appear as draggable bubbles on top of the image. Click a bubble to open the bubble editor.
- Move — drag from the body of the bubble. Resize — drag the handle on the corner.
- Tail direction — pick which character the bubble points at, or turn the tail off for narration.
- Shape — round for dialogue, jagged for shouts, cloud for thought, rectangular for captions.
- Font, size, color — pick a lettering font, size, and text color for each bubble independently.
- Hide the background of a bubble — in the bubble editor, set the Fill to Transparent (or drag the fill opacity to 0). The text stays crisp, the white bubble body disappears, and the tail hides with it. Great for narration overlays or SFX that should float over the art.
- Auto-arrange — Plotelle can reflow all bubbles on a page so they don't overlap the focal characters. Use it as a starting point, then nudge by hand.
The reader & exports
Open a project in Reader mode to preview it as a finished graphic novel — one page at a time, keyboard arrows to flip. From the reader you can:
- Export JPEG — a folder of high-resolution pages.
- Export PDF — one bound PDF of the whole book.
Free-tier exports include a small Plotelle watermark. Paid tiers export clean.
Publishing to the Library
From the reader, tap Publish to send your book to the public Library. You choose the cover, tagline, and whether comments are open. You can unpublish at any time.
Trial mode (no account)
The Try page runs the full premise / cast / outline flow in your browser with no sign-up. Nothing is saved to our servers — closing the tab wipes it. Sign up when you're ready to save, script panels, and generate art.
Page allowance, credits & watermarks
Every plan has a page allowance per cycle. A "page" is one successful panel-art generation.
- Free — 10 pages, watermark on export.
- Weekly — 20 pages per 7 days, no watermark.
- Monthly — 40 pages per 30 days, no watermark.
- Yearly — 200 pages per 30 days, no watermark.
- Extra pages — $1 per page, added to your account instantly, never expire.
Your remaining allowance and next reset date live at /app/billing.
Billing, subscriptions & cancellation
Open the drawer menu → Plans & billing. From there you can:

- Change plans or top up page credits.
- Open the Stripe billing portal to update your card, download invoices, or cancel your subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current cycle; you keep your pages until then.
